Our story
Located in the North-West of Hungary, on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, Les-hegy is a harsh, drought-stricken landscape with limestone soils, rugged terrain, abundant scorching sunshine, and a breathtaking view of Lake Balaton — a place seemingly created by God for growing grapes.

It is no coincidence that the Romans were already cultivating vineyards here, and this fine tradition has endured ever since: it survived the phylloxera epidemic and, though greatly tested, even the decades of communism.
The owner of the winery is Fruzsina Skrabski. People living on this hill have been making wine here for nearly 2,000 years.
When Fruzsi’s parents, Árpád Skrabski and Mária Kopp, discovered Les-hegy during a walk in 1970, only traces of vineyards remained, and the once beautiful press houses stood in ruins. At the last possible moment, they found a crumbling cellar, which they purchased and restored with their own hands. This is where the story of our winery began.
After her father’s passing, his daughter, Fruzsina Skrabski, and her husband continued the story. They worked to preserve the values of the place, restoring the ruins and replanting the vineyards.
Today, as one of the defining wineries of Les-hegy, we continue the work our predecessors began. It may forever remain a mystery who the true owner of this land is: us, or perhaps the spirit of Les-hegy itself — and we merely do what the hill asks of us.
Our philosophy
We cultivate 12 hectares of our own vineyards, but we do not work exclusively with our own grapes. We also purchase carefully selected, high-quality grapes from other trusted growers.
In terms of cellar capacity, we have no intention of becoming a large-scale producer. Instead, we remain a small boutique winery focused on uncompromising quality. Our average annual production is currently around 60,000 bottles.
Our commitment to quality over quantity is the reason we deliberately limit our production volumes.
In 2024, we discovered that our wines can also be enjoyed by people with histamine sensitivity. That year, we had our wines laboratory-tested for the first time, which revealed extremely low — often below detectable limits — histamine levels. As a result, we became the first and, to date, only low-histamine winery in Hungary.
Kestrel
The common kestrel – the protective bird of our winery – appears on every one of our bottles.
When this story began, our winery was still very young. At that time, we did not yet understand how closely we would have to live together with nature compared to large-scale wine producers: our estate lies within a national park and is surrounded by forests on all sides.

That autumn, we decided to leave our Blaufränkisch grapes on one of our parcels for a late harvest. The bunches were ripening beautifully, and with just one more week of patience we hoped to make a perfect wine. However, when we went out to harvest, not a single grape remained on the vines – the birds had picked every cluster clean. We were heartbroken.
A kestrel appears in our emblem: on our national park estate, it protects the vineyards from starlings.
The following year, however, something changed. One afternoon, a young common kestrel appeared from the nearby forest belt – and then decided to stay. It hovered above the vineyards and, with its presence alone, kept the smaller birds away from the grapes. Our harvest was saved! Since that day, we have regarded it as our symbol.
The ink drawing of the kestrel was created for us by our friend, the painter Győző Somogyi.

The cellar
Our cellar is located on Les-hegy, in the immediate vicinity of the vineyards. It is an original 150-year-old traditional earth-covered cellar with a reed roof, which we have significantly expanded underground and equipped with modern winemaking technology.
The cellar itself is not open for hospitality and can only be visited by professional partners. However, throughout the year we warmly welcome customers and visitors at our vinotheque located along Road 71, where our wines are bottled and sold.

The vineyards
We currently cultivate 12 hectares of productive vineyards. Most of our parcels are located on Les-hegy, a hillside offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Balaton. This exceptional vineyard site, known for producing truly distinctive wines, is also the centre of our estate.
We currently farm 12 hectares of producing vineyards.
According to local legend, the hill received its name (“Les” meaning watch) because sharp-eyed young men once watched the waters of Lake Balaton from here to decide where fishing would be most successful. Others say this is the “Sahara of Lake Balaton”, as due to its unique topographical conditions this area receives the least rainfall around the lake. Our own experience confirms that this is indeed a very dry, hot, almost Mediterranean microclimate, where even pomegranate, fig, and rosemary thrive. The soils are extremely calcareous and stony – a terrain seemingly created for vines and almond trees. Les-hegy is shared by three villages: Balatonudvari, Dörgicse, and Balatonakali.
A smaller but excellent 2-hectare parcel of our estate is located in the Vörösmál vineyard in Balatonfüred.

Our grape varieties
Barátcsuha is a rare and ancient pre-phylloxera grape variety with an extraordinary story. Globally, only 2,000 square meters of this autochthonous Hungarian vine remain, all of which we are honored to process. This unique variety was rediscovered in the 1970s by fellow winemaker Imre Nagy, whose daughter and her family continue to care for this cherished plantation.
In 1975, while tending the family’s vineyard, Imre spotted an unusual old vine. Unable to identify it, he sent a cutting for genetic analysis. The results confirmed it to be Barátcsuha, a long-lost Hungarian grape. This finding was further validated by Ervin Kiss, director of the Badacsony Viticulture and Winery Research Institute. To preserve the variety, 200 grafts were created at the institute, ensuring its survival. Today, this rare plantation thrives on Les-hegy, keeping a piece of Hungary’s viticultural heritage alive.
It expresses its terroir exceptionally well, and on the limestone-rich, stony soils of Les-hegy it produces particularly vibrant wines with a firm structure. Thanks to its versatility, it can be crafted into fresh rosé, light and fruit-forward red wines, or more complex, age-worthy styles.
Our Blaufränkisch rosé has received several prestigious awards in recent years, confirming the variety’s ability to achieve outstanding quality even in lighter styles. In our wine Sanguine, Blaufränkisch is blended with Cabernet Franc, where its deep, almost compote-like fruit character and lively acidity meet the spicier, dark chocolate notes of Cabernet Franc.
While the vines must be pruned every year above ground, their root systems continue to grow deeper and stronger below the surface. This results in more stable water supply and a dense network of fine roots that ensures excellent nutrient uptake, producing more concentrated and complex fruit. This is why old vines are capable of delivering exceptional quality. Our finest Olaszrizling is called Aequilibris, meaning perfect balance — the greatest virtue of great wines and the quality we aim to express in this bottle.
For our Furmint vineyard, István Szepsy personally selected old Furmint clone cuttings for us from Tokaj, which we then grafted and planted on Les-hegy in 2010. Interestingly, in certain vintages — such as 2021 — the grapes can even develop noble rot, similar to what happens in Tokaj. As Furmint is a truly indigenous Hungarian variety dating back to pre-phylloxera times, we named our finest Furmint wine from this parcel Nativus.
This is the foundation of one of our most ambitious goals: to produce the best — or at least one of the best — Rieslings in Hungary every year. Our flagship Riesling, Genius Loci, comes from one of the steepest and stoniest parcels of the Les-hegy vineyard.
Our team
I graduated as a viticulture and oenology engineer, and after finishing university, I set out to explore the world. I wanted to immerse myself in every aspect of the profession while discovering distant countries. I worked as a travelling winemaker in Australia, New Zealand, France, and Italy, always striving to observe and absorb the essence of each place: the relationship between landscape, people, wine, and culture.
In 2024, I truly felt for the first time that I was ready to take on an even greater challenge—drawing on these extraordinary experiences to begin building a winery, vintage by vintage.
For me, travelling and discovering parts of the world was an incredible journey of learning. Yet returning home was never a question, because I believe there is no place in the world more valuable than the Balaton Uplands.
Through our wines, I aim to reveal the true greatness of Les-hegy, this small yet remarkable region. I want anyone, anywhere in the world, tasting our wines to feel the beauty, joy, and energy that this place gives us.
I was born at Lake Balaton, and to me, this is the center of the world. I come from nearby Aszófő, and it is the magic of Les-hegy—the genius loci, the spirit of the place—that has kept me here.
I feel a deep responsibility to preserve this extraordinary landscape. I graduated in chemistry in Veszprém, but I was always drawn to the world of vineyards and wine. After completing my practical training, I joined the winery, where I found my true path.
My goal is to ensure the strong foundations behind excellent operations—legal, financial, and technical—because truly outstanding wines can only be created by a genuinely talented team. I work tirelessly to make us the best place to work in the region.
I was born in Balatonakali, and I am proud to represent a world-class product from my homeland both domestically and internationally. I have been a salesperson all my life, but I am especially drawn to the world of fine wine, as it belongs to the realm of high culture—true artistry.
What brings me the greatest satisfaction is seeing our customers return to us with genuine joy.
Good wine starts with great vineyards, a skilled viticulturist, and a talented winemaker — but I believe you also need someone who helps find the place of wine in people’s lives. That’s exactly why what I love most about working in the vinotheque is when someone walks in just looking for a single bottle and ends up leaving with new stories and a new favourite wine. In marketing and design, I work to ensure that the appearance of our wines reflects what is inside the bottle — because while good wine speaks for itself, a good label certainly helps.
It was a shared dream with my wife to live by Lake Balaton, which is why we moved here from the city. I have always been drawn to nature and plants, and to living in harmony with the environment around me—this is what led me to become an agricultural engineer.
Instead of large-scale, chemically driven production focused on quantity, I believe in the future of small family estates, nature-based solutions, integrated plant protection, nurturing soil life, and producing high-quality fruit and wine.
