The first and only low-histamine winery in Hungary!
Who benefits from low-histamine wine?
Our low-histamine wines are ideal for those sensitive to histamine, including individuals who suffer from seasonal allergies or experience mild symptoms—such as headaches, skin redness, or digestive discomfort—after enjoying a glass of wine.
How did we discover this?
For years, a close friend who is histamine-sensitive insisted our wines didn’t trigger her symptoms and urged us to label them as histamine-free. Her persistence finally convinced us, and in the spring of 2024, we sent our wines to a laboratory in Germany for testing. The results confirmed her claims: nearly all our wines have histamine levels below measurable limits (less than 0.01 mg/L), while the rest are still remarkably low (below 0.05 mg/L). For context, typical wines contain 10–30 mg/L of histamine, meaning our wines have up to 1,000 times less histamine.
What is histamine?
Histamine is a natural compound present in all living organisms. In humans, it plays a crucial role in immune responses, allergy symptoms, and neurotransmission. In wine, histamine is produced during fermentation, often by certain strains of bacteria and yeasts.
Why are Skrabski wines low in histamine?
Unlike most wineries, we rely on spontaneous fermentation rather than commercial yeasts, which often produce histamine. The unique native yeast cultures in our cellar naturally ferment our wines without creating significant histamine levels—a fortunate phenomenon for histamine-sensitive wine lovers.
Why “low-histamine” and not “histamine-free”?
Histamine exists in almost everything, so it would be misleading to claim that our wines are completely histamine-free. However, their levels are so minimal that most laboratories can’t even detect them, making them safe for those with histamine sensitivities.
Who should try low-histamine wines?
- People with histamine sensitivity or intolerance, sometimes called histamineosis or histamine allergy.
- Those with seasonal allergies may benefit from avoiding additional histamine intake during peak allergy seasons.
- Anyone who experiences mild symptoms, such as headaches, itching, sneezing, or heartburn, after drinking wine may find relief with low-histamine options.
While low-histamine wine isn’t a guaranteed solution for everyone, many of our customers report significant improvements—and some even claim it has changed their wine-drinking experience entirely!
